Our guest children’s author for 2011 will be Mary Casanova, an award winning children’s author of novels and picture books. Her books frequently land on state children’s choice book master lists across the country.

+ Keynote - Thursday at 8:00 a.m. - Kendra Hughes - "Eliminating Bullying and Harassment: Roles and Responsibilities of the School Community"
Kendra Hughes is a Senior Program Advisor for Northwest Regional Education Laboratory. REL Northwest, the Regional Educational Laboratory Program operated by Education Northwest, is one of 10 regional educational laboratories funded by the Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences. REL connects practitioners to research through applied research and development projects, studies, and other related technical assistance activities. Kendra will address Eliminating Bullying and Harassment: Strategies to Ensure a Safe School Community. Her keynote will provide information and resources to use in developing policies to address, respond to and eliminate bullying and harassment in schools.
Research and resources to use in implementing policies and practices to
eliminate bullying and harassment will be shared. Office for Civil Rights
guidelines for reporting, investigating and documenting complaints will
be covered.

+ Keynote - Thursday at 10:00 a.m. - Christian Moore - "Why Try? Overcoming poverty, violence and failure"
Christian Moore will share motivational stories from his own life experiences as a youth with severe learning disabilities. He will walk the audience through the social and emotional assets that allowed him to get a masters degree and become a nationally recognized child advocate. He will explore the seeds of motivation and hope which enable children to overcome poverty, violence, and failure. Christian is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and has an M.S.W. from Brigham Young University. He has several years experience working with at risk youth, including work as a school counselor at an alternative high school, as a counselor with the Utah State Department of Youth Corrections, and as a youth outpatient therapist at a community mental health agency specializing in adolescents with conduct disorder and learning disabilities. He is the Founder of the WhyTry Organization, and has led the development of an at-risk program, "The WhyTry Program," that is used by over 500 school districts nationwide. The program is also used by several private and public mental health agencies, group homes, and youth detention centers.

+ Keynote Speaker - Friday - Dave Shepard - "All Star Teaching - Making The First Team"
Dave Shepard, a native of rural North Carolina and a product of public education for thirty five years, brings experience, common sense and practicality to any educational gathering. His experiences include teaching, coaching, curriculum writing, program design and administration. Since his retirement in 1999, he has devoted his time and energy to helping schools become safer, more efficient and more successful environments for all teachers and students. His presentations are generally characterized by a high-energy format, a simple yet practical style, a down to earth sense of humor and an easy going manner, which makes the presentations both informative and digestible.
